Germany's largest ship design office has developed a new COMPACT Class as the result of the successful launching of its designs for a series of 24 vessels of the type Topaz 1700 and currently 6 ships of the type Ruby 2500.

Compared to the CV SAPPHIRE 4800 series already in operation, developed by Neptun Ship Design (Rostock), the new SAPPHIRE 5300 COMPACT class follows a complete new design philosophy which sets new standards in terms of transport efficiency and construction costs in this size of class. By moderate widening of the vessel from 37.3 to 38.8 m while reducing the side tank width one additionally row of containers can be stowed below deck. That means about 60 containers more instead of ballast water space. This Neptun COMPACT Class reduces the necessary ballast water volume for ship stability. Thereby for all standard loading cases with uniform container weights of <17t / TEU now about 2000t more cargo are available. In compliance with the new CSS - Rules, it is possible to carry consistently pallet-wide or even extra-pallet-wide containers. Thus the COMPACT Class recommends itself to future feeder services for European hubs.

By CFD calculations in advance of the towing tests at the SVA Potsdam it was succeeded to minimize the still water resistance. There have been carried out about 125 RANSE calculations which allow the finding of reliable forecasts for the towing resistance. Still one year ago, this enormous computational effort would have failed at the inadequacy of available hardware cluster. As a result of this optimization new ship lines were found which significantly differs from the initial design. In parallel a propeller was developed which, in comparison to the normal stock propeller, was directly used inside the towing tank and provided a very satisfactory results. Therewith the COMPACT Class achieves a service speed of 21.5kn with a fuel consumption of the main engine of only 82t per day whether it has a much reduced ship length. With a consumption of only 43.7g Fuel/hom. TEU/nm it leads the league of previously comparable 5000 TEU vessels. Even after the coming in force of the third phase in 2025 the EEDI value is still 14% below the reference. A number of 1000 reefer container slots, a special low-friction paint of hull, top lashing bridges of the newest generation and a triple fuel system will complete the picture of a pioneering container vessel. As reported on 14/8/2015 in THB, the Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding ltd. from China successfully signed with the Zodiac Maritime ltd. a shipbuilding contract of four plus four CV Sapphire 5300 COMPACT with delivery in 2017.

acquisition, 07/22/2015 LNG Tanker for Anthony Veder

Neptun Ship Design is commissioned by the Neptun Werft in Rostock with the design for a tanker transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). The vessel is ordered by the Dutch shipping company Anthony Veder tanker and shall have a length of approximately 160 m by a width of approximately 25 m with a load capacity of 18 000 m³. The ship is designed to be especially environmentally friendly because, for example, it is driven by LNG.
