Family-run shipyards decide on joint acquisition of NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN in Rostock

Papenburg, 13 April 2022 – The MEYER Group and the FASSMER company decide to jointly acquire the renowned shipbuilding engineering company NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN in Rostock with around 100 employees. The company with more than 30 years of experience and customers all over the world shall continue to operate independently and in its current structure. Additional jobs are to be created to strengthen the engineering office. This will enable NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN to continue to serve customers worldwide with its recognized high level of expertise, while at the same time implementing projects for the two German shipyard groups. MEYER and FASSMER are thus strengthening their focus on the development and construction of highly complex special ships, on which the future market for new ships will concentrate.

In this way, two successful German specialized shipyards, managed as family-owned companies in the seventh and fifth generations, are committed to preserving qualified shipbuilding jobs in Germany. Approval of the takeover by the Cartel Office is still pending. "We are strengthening our Rostock location with our involvement in NEPTUN WERFT, MEYER NEPTUN Engineering and now NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN. For us, this commitment is a clear commitment to this location", says Bernard Meyer, Managing Director of MEYER WERFT. "The production of technically complex special ships is very construction-intensive and requires a lot of experience. With NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN, we are gaining a partner who has already supported us with a great deal of competence in recent years, including, for example, the new construction of the LNG-fueled "ATAIR". Special shipbuilding will continue to dominate the newbuilding market in Germany and Europe. We therefore see a lot of potential in this cooperation," adds Harald Fassmer, managing partner at FASSMER. "I am very pleased that we have found two renowned German companies that want to preserve the jobs at NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN and further develop the company," says Dr. Christoph Morgen, insolvency administrator of MV Werften. Further tailwind for sustainability strategy The MEYER Group and FASSMER are thus further expanding their cooperation. Both shipyards will develop and build the new German research vessel METEOR IV by 2026. "NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN will also play a significant role in this project, giving it a new long-term perspective. In addition, we plan to hire new engineers. This cooperation will support us in achieving our ambitious sustainability goals. All three companies have been committed to this for many years. Now we are jointly giving these activities further tailwind and can offer our solutions for sustainable shipping also outside our shipyard groups," says Malte Poelmann, Chief Technology Officer of MEYER Group. It is particularly pleasing that the long-standing managing directors of the engineering company will also be involved again as shareholders. Under the management of Helge Sell, Stephan Merkel and Roland Gräber, NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN looks back on a history of more than 30 years. During this time NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN has realized many successful projects, also with NEPTUN WERFT and FASSMER. Most recently, the company was part of the insolvent MV Werften. "This combination of continuity, new impulses as well as concrete orders from MEYER and FASSMER and other German shipyards gives NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN positive prospects for the future," says Helge Sell, Managing Director of NEPTUN SHIP DESIGN.

Without innovative shipbuilding, climate-friendly shipping and efficient global offshore wind energy generation, the necessary climate protection goals and a sustainable global economy will not be achievable.

Energy generation and production facilities for alternative fuels offshore will depend on gigantic wind farm projects, mostly on floating structures.

Large, efficient, safe and environmentally friendly are the main requirements for the upcoming offshore wind projects. They also apply to ships required for transportation, installation and maintenance. The logistics challenges for transportation and installation worldwide affect fixed but above all floating turbines.

Neptun Ship Design is very proud to present the first offshore crane ship to the market today that can effectively and safely install turbine components one after the other on both fixed and floating foundations.

"Blue Amethyst" was developed in close cooperation with system suppliers with solid references such as Kongsberg, Siemens Energy, Trident Maritime Systems, Mohr Hebetechnik, Bröhl, Flender and Hawart.

Electromechanical load handling devices such as the TULT (Tower Upending & Lifting Tool), VBIT (Vertical Blade Installation Tool) and the SBPT (Spreader Blade Package Tool) ensure a high degree of flexibility.

Evaluated by ABS through a Conceptual Design Review, Blue Amethyst is an unrivaled crane ship design for worldwide use in offshore wind.

In conjunction with highly efficient feeder logistics, the rigid lifting crane system from Blue Amethyst can take over turbine components in DP mode and assemble them safely one after the other.

Deck areas and safety requirements for the storage of turbine components are no longer design conditions for this type of crane ship.

The dynamics of long crane booms and main hook wire ropes are a thing of the past. The main hook of the innovative Rack & Pinion Jackup Cantilever crane from Blue Amethyst is always positioned very close to the main winch.

The PCOS (Predicted Crane Operation System) enables a safe installation of towers and nacelles. The energy system of Blue Amethyst works with a DC network, buffered by batteries. The future generators will run on CO2-neutral green ammonia.

Alternating assemblies on several turbines enable efficient process organization when building wind farms. Conventional onshore assemble floating wind turbines and costly tug logistics are obsolete.

Floaters such as Spars can be delivered and watered by our Wind Turbine Transport Vessel (WTTV) Blue Azurit. After anchoring and installing the export cables, Blue Amethyst is ready for the wind turbines offshore installation.

Blue Amethyst can also be used for fixed and floating offshore wind turbines maintenance around the world, e.g. to replace rotor blades.

In connection with the desire to increasingly use in the future green hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels, green ammonia as hydrogen carrier is becoming increasingly important because it is much more suitable for the storage applications. This is especially true for shipping.

The advantage of green ammonia is the possibility of production from infinitely available raw material ( water & air ) by green energy from f.e.solar and wind and that worldwide. May be offshore? Ammonia-capable engines, corresponding tank- and fuel systems as well monitoring applications to protect the crew in the engine room from the toxicity of ammonia are the challenges for the supply chain.

With our partners from science and industry we are starting the R&D project „AmmoniaMot“, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics. With the aim of being able to supply pragmatic shipowners and shipyards worldwide with products and ship designs "ammonia ready" soon.

Climate change also requires new ship designs for the transport sector on inland waterways. Partly low water levels and stricter emissions regulations determine the designs and equipment of new tankers.

New inland waterway tankers are only competitive if they are lightweight constructions and equipped with energy-efficient propulsion concepts supported by batteries.
Due to the increasing restriction of shipping traffic at low river water levels, Neptun Ship Design have designed innovative proposals for a chemical tanker with a low water depth.
Our company has successfully delivered the basic design approved by the classification society Lloyds Register for a 110m x 11.45m chemical tanker to the customer.

press release, 12/03/2018 NEPTUN MOVER HAFF - Battery-driven car-passenger ferry

Contracted by the city of Ueckermünde, NSD and the subcontractor “CPL Competence in Ports and Logistics GmbH“ analyzed the potential for a new ferry line across the Stettiner Haff to the isle of Usedom.

Based on the results a feasibility study and initial design for the battery-driven car-passenger ferry “Neptun Mover Haff” were developed.
The results have been presented to the city and invited guests on 03.12.2018.

The logistic for the transportation of the elements for offshore wind turbines gets more and more the bottleneck for the international markets. Export from factories or feeder to the sites (f.e. at US east coast) will be one of the main challenges.

Even more critical because of the indicated weights and sizes for the coming turbines 12-15MW.
Neptun Ship Design presented to the shipping industry the innovative Wind Turbine Transport Vessel BLUE AZURIT. The classification society ABS issued now the “Letter for Approval in Principal“ after review of the main concept drawings and documents.

Beside new installation vessels the focus to be taken on efficient logistics for export, import and feeder.
Coming 10 – 15 MW turbines with continuous welded and horizontal outfitted turbine towers in combination with our wind turbine transport vessel BLUE AZURIT will open up new challenges and opportunities for suppliers and wind park projects around the world.

Production facilities and distribution harbors with free height restrictions may usable, so get chances for feeder and export. Great offshore harbors for component storage, preassembly and jack up prepared seabed will not strongly required anymore.

On the 2nd US Offshore Wind conference was presented the great potential of US-offshore wind projects and for the required supply chain. Lessons learned from Europe implemented in pragmatic planning and investment gives the US – offshore wind industry all resources in competition to traditional energy power resources.

When seeing the expected power requirements from the coastal main cities and industrial complexes it will be even more significant to invest in the renewable energy market. Main important step is now to find the best suitable east coast location for storage of imported wind turbine components, for local content fabrication like towers and monopiles and for investment in John´s Act transport vessel. At the conference our new Wind Turbine Transport Vessel Concept (WTTV) – BLUE AZURIT, the most effective transport vessel for next generation wind turbines, has been launched.
