The shipyard group MV WERFTEN is acquiring the Rostock-based Neptun Ship Design, which as Germany’s largest ship design office has enjoyed an excellent reputation worldwide for decades thanks to its impressive know-how and successful designs.

Wismar, 17 January 2019. Neptun Ship Design in Rostock is being acquired as an independent subsidiary of MV WERFTEN to provide design services for the shipyard group in future. In addition to the group’s own designers at its yards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund as well as a designer network throughout Europe, further significant engineering capacities are thus being united under one roof. The acquisition will increase the workforce at MV WERFTEN by 120 experts.

“We welcome the acquisition and the new, experienced colleagues in our team. We are very familiar with their expertise from our intensive cooperation in the past. We appreciate one another, we need this potential and we are thus all the more pleased about the new member of our family”, stated Peter Fetten, CEO of MV WERFTEN.

MV WERFTEN is currently focusing on the Global Class and the expedition ship “Crystal Endeavor”. The new engineers and designers will be mainly working on the basic design of new ship projects. Highly complex vessels will now be developed and designed together in an expanded team.

Stephan Merkel, Managing Director at Neptun Ship Design, noted: “We are proud about our development to date, but it is now time to take on the challenges involved with the engineering required for the most advanced passenger ships in the world as well as the entire current and future product portfolio of MV WERFTEN. It is certainly a great opportunity for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. We now want to be directly involved in realising this.”

The purchase agreement was signed by all the parties in Wismar on 16 January and will become effective after approval has been given by the cartel authorities. It was agreed not to disclose any details about the structure of the transaction or the purchase price.

“The acquisition also, of course, takes into consideration the handling of current orders and the continuation of our research and ship development projects so that we maintain our traditions and our spirit of innovation. That we’ll now be doing this under a new roof and with direct participation in the mega projects is a real boost to our motivation”, added Stephan Merkel.

Contracted by the city of Ueckermünde, NSD and the subcontractor “CPL Competence in Ports and Logistics GmbH“ analyzed the potential for a new ferry line across the Stettiner Haff to the isle of Usedom.

Based on the results a feasibility study and initial design for the battery-driven car-passenger ferry “Neptun Mover Haff” were developed.
The results have been presented to the city and invited guests on 03.12.2018.
The studies and animations of the ferry and berth/pontoon infrastructure are available for download.

The logistic for the transportation of the elements for offshore wind turbines gets more and more the bottleneck for the international markets. Export from factories or feeder to the sites (f.e. at US east coast) will be one of the main challenges.

Even more critical because of the indicated weights and sizes for the coming turbines 12-15MW.
Neptun Ship Design presented to the shipping industry the innovative Wind Turbine Transport Vessel BLUE AZURIT. The classification society ABS issued now the “Letter for Approval in Principal“ after review of the main concept drawings and documents.

The offshore wind industry gets pressure for cost reduction, reduced project risks and higher reliability.

Growing turbine sizes, local content production and efficient supply chain are some of the known key words.

Beside new installation vessels the focus to be taken on efficient logistics for export, import and feeder.

Coming 10 – 15 MW turbines with continuous welded and horizontal outfitted turbine towers in combination with our wind turbine transport vessel BLUE AZURIT will open up new challenges and opportunities for suppliers and wind park projects around the world.

Production facilities and distribution harbors with free height restrictions may usable, so get chances for feeder and export. Great offshore harbors for component storage, preassembly and jack up prepared seabed will not strongly required anymore.

The efficiency of installation and commissioning will improving, because the jack up installation vessels don´t need to travel to shore for reloading.

Summary

· Offshore wind nations can start his renewable energy programs on reliable marine logistic and technic.

· Offshore wind nations can start with his business cases for local content production.

· Offshore wind installation & transport vessel operators can start with his new building plans.

· Offshore wind turbine suppliers can be confident for safe and efficient handling / installation of his equipment.

In 2017, Neptun Ship Design celebrates its first quarter century. Germany’s biggest ship design company, headquartered in Rostock, has earned an outstanding international reputation as a developer of advanced vessels.

Read more about topics by Neptun Ship Design at the second brochure „Schiffbau Industrie“ in 2017 of the German organization „VSM“ (Verband für Schiffbau und Meerestechnik e.V.). Text presented in German.

Twenty-five years ago former employees of Neptun Werft shipyard established two new companies, “Neptun Stahlkonstruktions GmbH” and “Neptun Engineering GmbH”. Eventually, they were joined by “Wismarer Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH”, which prompted them to consolidate their resources under the common brand name “Neptun Ship Design” (NSD). This merger enabled the experts to offer comprehensive ship design services from a single source. Whether they are working on newbuilding projects comprising every stage from design to delivery, or planning detailed retrofits and conversions, the engineers of Neptun Ship Design account for all aspects and components. Today NSD is the biggest provider of ship engineering services in Germany. More than 120 employees attend to every detail of the ambitious projects the company receives from all segments of the maritime industry. Clients include well-known domestic and international shipyards and ship owners. From river cruise ships to multipurpose ships and specialized offshore vessels, more than 200 ships can proudly state they were “Designed by Neptun”. On the 2nd US Offshore Wind conference was presented the great potential of US-offshore wind projects and for the required supply chain. Lessons learned from Europe implemented in pragmatic planning and investment gives the US – offshore wind industry all resources in competition to traditional energy power resources.

When seeing the expected power requirements from the coastal main cities and industrial complexes it will be even more significant to invest in the renewable energy market. Main important step is now to find the best suitable east coast location for storage of imported wind turbine components, for local content fabrication like towers and monopiles and for investment in John´s Act transport vessel. At the conference our new Wind Turbine Transport Vessel Concept (WTTV) – BLUE AZURIT, the most effective transport vessel for next generation wind turbines, has been launched.
